J&K: 4 policemen killed in IED blast in Sopore

Four policemen lost their lives and two others were seriously injured after an IED blast set off by militants in Sopore town of north Kashmir's Baramulla district on Saturday morning.

They said some noises came from the Gole Market side and as soon as policemen on duty approached the area, there was a massive blast that ripped apart bodies of four policemen. Congress Chief GA Mir condemned the killing and said the incident had exposed the tall claims of the Mehbooba government about the Kashmir situation being normal.

The killed policemen have been identified as ASI Irshad Ahmad Sheikh (ARP825685) of Chanoth Doda, Constable Mohd Amin (ARP106522) of Sogam Kupwara, Constable Ghulam Nabi Ahangar (ARP066093) of Rohama Sopore, and Constable Parwaiz Ahmad (ARP106059) of Dolipora, Handwara. "My deepest condolences to their families".

The strike was called by separatist leaders who challenge India's sovereignty over Kashmir. But it was not immediately known which group carried out the attack. The report quoted a source as saying that the IED was planted beneath a shop. "May the four courageous J&K police personnel killed in the line of duty today rest in peace". Six or seven shops have suffered damage as well", he said, adding "it was the first (IED) blast since 2015. It exploded when the policemen reached there, said an official. The injured were shifted to hospital and a search operation is underway, a police officer said.
