The Weeknd Severs Ties with H&M After Controversial Ad

The R&B singer, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, signed on with H&M previous year to collaborate on a clothing line.

Singer The Weeknd said Monday that he will no longer work with H&M after the clothing company posted an ad of a black child in a hoodie with the words "Coolest monkey in the jungle" on the front.

"I am certain H&M is aware of the negative connotations presented", wrote one Twitter user. "And the ads will be pulled".

Reacting,
Anna Eriksson, a spokeswoman for the retailer, said: "This image has now been removed from all H&M channels and we apologise to anyone this may have offended".

An apology was offered after consumers exploded on Instagram and Twitter, resulting in the removal of the ad from the British H&M's website/social media.

His current 18-piece collection, "The Weeknd X H&M", which features a mix of menswear items like sweatshirts and hoodies, is still available online.

The hoodie, which was sold in the clothing chain's United Kingdom stores, sparked a social media backlash, with consumers vowing to stop shopping at its stores and calling for an investigation.

"This is how we should represent our men as kings thank you!", one person said, while another added: "Yaaass, you're so, you're so, you're so AWESOME!"

While some netizens blamed carelessness, a lack of cultural awareness or bad styling decisions for the retailer's mistake, others weren't quite so forgiving.
