Spider Sparks Apartment Fire After Attempt to Kill It With Flames

A California man, who attempted to kill a spider with a blowtorch, accidentally ended up setting an apartment on fire, according to local media.

A Northern California man was so pissed off by the big spider he saw in his apartment over the weekend that he chose to kill it using fire.

Flames quickly spread from the mattress to curtains and several other items in the bedroom, fire officials said.

The residents attempted to put out the flames with a garden hose, but that didn't work so they called in the professionals.

Firefighters from the Redding Fire Department rushed to the scene, arriving to find smoke streaming out of the second floor of the building.

While he successfully set the arachnid ablaze the risky method also caused a much greater problem as the "huge wolf spider" managed to scarper onto a nearby mattress which promptly when went up in flames, witness Lyndsey Wisegarver told the Redding Record Searchlight.

Wisegarver said the men had been talking for some time about moving out of the apartment prior to the fire.

The building was damaged and the residents will have to stay elsewhere. The unit they were living in is uninhabitable, Pitt said.

Firefighters said the incident remains under investigation.

Wolf spiders are not poisonous, and although they are typically non-aggressive, they will bite if they feel provoked.
