Teacher questioning administrative pay raises removed from board meeting in handcuffs

Teacher questioning administrative pay raises removed from board meeting in handcuffs

Moments later, Hargrave is seen being taken to the ground, handcuffed, and dragged out of the building by the much larger marshal as fellow teachers looked on in horror.

Deyshia Hargrave, an English language arts teacher at Rene Rost Middle School in Kaplan, Louisiana, was questioning a proposed $38,000 raise for the district superintendent during the meeting's public comment period when a city marshal asked her to leave. A teacher's union lawyer is investigating, and while teachers were at work Tuesday, a School Board member says there is talk of a strike.

During a meeting of the Vermillion Parish School Board on Monday, Deyshia Hargrave was addressing the board during a public comments session when she was ruled "out of order" by school board president Anthony Fontana, KATC reported.

Ms Hargrave did not appear to be raising her voice during the meeting.

He also added that the marshal who arrested Hargrave is a school officer employed by the school board who was "not acting in any official capacity on behalf of the city of Abbeville".

"I have a serious issue with a superintendent or any person of leadership getting any type of raise", Hargrave said. But when the board ultimately voted to approve Puyau's new contract with the $38,000 raise, the frustrated teacher stood up again to speak out. She was later removed in handcuffs. Fontana said it would have been the marshal's duty to escort her out of the meeting but not arrest her unless she had committed a crime.

It is now unclear if the city marshal acted on his own accord or under the direction of someone on the board.

The superintendent said that the board would not press charges against Hargrave, but records showed that she was booked in jail, KATC reported.

"What happened here tonight; the way that females are treated in Vermilion Parish, I have never seen a man removed from this room".
