Video shows how alligators cope with freezing temperatures

If they need to breathe, the gators will slowly surface and poke their nostrils out of the water like can be seen in the video.

Apparently, the alligators have a natural instinct that kicks in that lets them know when the river is about to freeze. When it gets warm again and the ice melts, the alligators will start thermoregulating their body temperatures.

Footage captured by the staff of the Shallotte River Swamp Park in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina shows the somewhat surreal survival technique employed by the cold-blooded reptiles which allows them to be frozen in place in the park's pond. "It just so happened southeastern North Carolina recently had a freeze like none other, so the ice literally froze right around their snouts". Alligators will go into a state of brumation.

How have alligators dealt with the freezing temperatures that hit our area? The folks at Shallotte River Swamp Park used a series of Facebook posts to show the public how these reptiles survive the frosty conditions

It might look like these gators made a big mistake in judgement, but it's actually a pretty clever trick they use to breathe, and experts say it's sort of like hibernation. This includes two alligators that were used as "guard animals" by N.C. drug dealers. But that's no problem, according to the park's accompanying blog post.

"Just shows you how smart they are, and how wonderful it is to see them do this exact survival technique, no matter how horrific it looks to us humans", posted Linda McMullan on Facebook. Turns out they stick their noses through the ice to survive.

After nearly being eradicated in the early 20th century, alligators have made a comeback in North Carolina.
