Flu Activity Continues To Increase

Representatives from Central Health and Austin Regional clinic both said that it is not too late to get a flu shot and while it is less effective this year, it still offers a layer of protection.

Health officials are saying the season is shaping up to be a particularly severe one, with the number of flu cases reported at almost four times the number of cases at the same time past year.

Officials with the Boise and West Ada school districts said they aren't seeing a spike in flu right now. The oldest and the youngest are the most vulnerable.

Confirmed child flu cases at CHOA hospitals have more than doubled over the past few weeks from an average of 12 percent to 28 percent. During that same period in 2016, there were 87 influenza-associated hospitalizations. Some states that have already had outbreaks of H3N2 are beginning to see cases of H1N1.

"For most people who do get Aussie flu, it will be a normal flu-like illness lasting around seven days, and many people who get the flu this year will have another strain rather than this one".

It's not the worst flu season in the past decade, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shared during a press conference Friday morning. "Even if the vaccine does not prevent you from getting the flu, it will make it less likely for you to become seriously ill or require hospitalization".

Most flu shots cover four flu viruses - two influenza A viruses (H3N2 and H1N1) - and two B viruses.

In Cuyahoga County, there have been two flu-related deaths, including a 70-year-old woman.

In the previous season, 219 people died in North Carolina from the flu. It comes on suddenly and symptoms may include fever, headache, tiredness, cough, sore throat, nasal congestion and body aches.

Montana is current seeing widespread influenza activity and the CDC is also warning the public about the potential severity this flu season poses.

Elsewhere in the country, 91 people have died from the flu this influenza season, including 27 people under the age of 65, according to the CDPC. "People get confused with saying that's influenza".
