Google to Build New Data Centers Around the World

Google to Build New Data Centers Around the World

Google says it would add five regions and build three new submarine cables as it expands its infrastructure for cloud customers.

While Google will directly own and operate the Curie Cable, the new Havfrue Cable is being built by a multi-stakeholder consortium that includes Facebook.

Another cable, dubbed as Havfrue and running from the United States to Denmark and Ireland, would serve North Atlantic customers.

HK-G, or the Hong Kong-Guam cable system, is the third new cable that Google expects to commission in 2019.

While these are new submarine cables, Google is hardly a novice in the undersea cabling arena.

"Google subsea cables provide reliability, speed and security not available from any other cloud", Sloss stated.

A "Curie" cable connecting Chile and Los Angeles will be the first intercontinental connection of its kind not owned by a telecom company, Sloss said.

Google's VP of cloud services told the WSJ that it had no choice if it wanted faster links to regions not now well served by data connections. It said owning the cable will allow it to control the design and construction process, and technical specifications, and once it is deployed make routing decisions that optimize for latency and availability. Sloss noted that Google has over 100 points of presence around the world connected by a combination of subsea cables and fiber optic links. Over the past three years since Greene came on board, the company has spent a whopping $30 billion beefing up the infrastructure. The three cables will connect Chile to Los Angeles, the U.S. to Denmark and Ireland and Hong Kong to Guam, and are called, respectively, Curie, Havfrue and HK-G. These three cables will take Google's direct investments up to 11 cables, with the others including: Indigo, PLCN, Tannat, Junior, Monet, FASTER, SJC and UNITY.

Finally, we come to the HK-G cable, which will see Google teaming with RTI-C and NEC to open up "multiple scalable, diverse paths to Australia", while at the same working hand-in-hand with the new data center that's scheduled to come online in Hong Kong.

The system now has a greater total capacity than any other undersea cable, Google SVP of Technical Infrastructure Urs Hölzle revealed in a blog post. The five regions will be added in 2018 beginning in this quarter, and then three subsea cables will be commissioned in 2019.
