Thousands Startled Following Meteor Explosion Over Southeast Michigan

Thousands Startled Following Meteor Explosion Over Southeast Michigan

Lucky skywatchers were dazzled by a brilliant fireball that briefly lit up the night sky over MI and neighboring states on Tuesday (January 16, 2018) and caused the equivalent of a magnitude 2.0 quake, according to the United States Geological Survey.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the natural disaster was centered about five miles west-southwest of New Haven, Michigan, located about 40 miles northeast of Detroit.

"This particular one is probably a once-a-year, maybe three-times-a-year type of fireball", said Mike Hankey, operations manager for the American Meteor Society.

Some of the people managed to capture it on camera and shared videos and pictures on the social media. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the "Michigan Meteor" now has its own Twitter account.

NWSD later confirmed that a meteor had occurred, citing the U.S. Geological Survey. "It is likely that there are meteorites on the ground near this region - one of our colleagues has found a Doppler weather radar signature characteristic of meteoritic material falling to earth".

"It looks like from videos and reports we've gotten (that it's a) meteor", Dale said.

In addition to firsthand accounts from residents throughout Livingston County, reports also came in from several other states and Ontario, Canada.

"Pieces of an asteroid lying near Detroit?".

Bonadurer, director of the Planetarium at the Milwaukee Public Museum said the real deal happened Tuesday night across the Midwestern sky.

A NASA account tweeted data from the GOES16 satellite that may have also caught the meteor entering earth's atmosphere. It was primarily seen from MI.

This "fireball meteor" seems to be a bolide meteor according to the Michael J. Narlock, Head of Astronomy at Cranbrook Institute of Science in MI.

Any would-be meteorite hunters need to know that the meteorites now belong to the owners of the property on which they fell, Cooke said.

Whitford tells News 10 there are three types of meteors, and with the information gathered so far they expect this to be a stony meteorite.
