Boston U: Repeated impacts, not concussion, cause CTE

New studies from Boston University in humans and mice suggest that repeated head injury can trigger the onset of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) - a neurodegenerative disease associated with head trauma - independent of concussion.

Dr. Lee Goldstein is a researcher at Boston University where he specializes in degenerative orders, specifically Alzheimer's disease - which shares numerous same symptoms as CTE. Goldstein, together with an worldwide team of researchers, examined the brains of four football players, aged 17 or 18, who died a day to four months after a head injury.

"Study results shed light on the origins of CTE and relationship to traumatic brain injury (TBI), concussion and subconcussive head injury", a BU press release on the study said.

"It suggests we don't have to wait years to decades to start seeing this type of injury to the brain", said Goldstein.

CTE is a known condition among professional football players and military veterans and those who have been exposed to bomb blasts etc. "It can heal itself, but yet small injuries over time can lead to significant chronic damage, so it's just going to take time for us to understand the brain", Tran said. He says that his work is the first evidence "that we have where we have controlled experiments where we can make that case very strongly and convincingly". She said she plans to be vigilant but still support her children as they play sports.

Right now CTE can only be diagnosed after someone's death.

The researchers observed an abnormal buildup of a protein called tau - a hallmark of CTE - in two of the athletes who experienced head trauma. "Most hits to the head are not concussive. but no one is paying any attention to them", said Goldstein. Boston University led the study, and Cleveland Clinic, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and VA Boston Healthcare System scientists all contributed. Goldstein, an associate professor at Boston University School of Medicine and author on the new paper.

Dr. Comstock is an expert in the subject area but was not involved in the study.

The conversation surrounding CTE has primarily focused on the role concussions play in the accumulation of the tau protein in blood vessels in the brain, which can cause cell death, dementia and cognitive impairments.

Goldstein and his colleagues advocate for no tackle football before 14 because children's bodies, particularly their necks and upper bodies, aren't strong enough to counteract the bobbling of the head and shaking of the brain that occurs during tackles. "That's what we wanted to nail here", Goldstein said. "This is really preserving the future for football". The study also found CTE diagnoses in 87 percent of 202 former football players, including high school, college, NFL, CFL and semipro.
