Flu Season: NH Doctors Starting to See Surge in Patients

Flu Season: NH Doctors Starting to See Surge in Patients

Health officials in Flathead County are addressing widespread concerns about influenza in Montana, as hundreds of confirmed flu cases in the Flathead have increased the need for preventative measures.

Fifteen flu-related deaths were reported last week, bringing the total to 47 for the season, including one pediatric case.

DHHS obtains death data through death certificates and according to the state, delays in the reporting of deaths "may cause the number of reported (pneumonia/flu) deaths to vary considerably each week".

It's important to note that the latter map utilizes the proportion of visits to health care providers for ILI activity level within a State, but does not measure the extent of geographic spread of flu within a State.

There have been growing reports of flu cases in the territory.

Cuomo last week called on all New Yorkers six months of age and over who have not yet received a flu shot to get vaccinated as soon as possible. During the 2015-2016 season, three children and one pregnant woman died as a result of the virus. "In addition, influenza vaccine effectiveness (VE) in general has been lower against A (H3N2) viruses".

The burden of seasonal flu in the United States varies widely from year to year, depending on which viruses are circulating, when the season starts and finishes, how well the vaccine is working, and how many people have it.

"The sooner someone gets treated, the more effective it is", he said.

Though a vaccination may not prevent the flu, it will lessen the severity and duration, O'Donnell said. Here in Arizona, cases of the flu have continued to rise. Typical symptoms of the flu include sudden fever, aching muscles, sore throat, coughing, runny nose, headache, and eye pain.

"It's definitely a more aggressive strain and more infectious", said Dr. Anne Barnes, Legacy Community Health chief medical officer.

According to the CDC, the proportion of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness at the national level is 5.8 percent, which is above the national baseline of 2.2 percent. "Also, please get your children vaccinated", said Fitzgerald, who is urging citizens "to take every advantage that you can to protect yourself". Flu vaccines continue to be available at many pharmacies and grocery stores, and through primary care physicians and some specialists.

Winnike says the best prevention for the spread of the virus is still the flu vaccine. It seems to rev up the body's immune responses in a way that can actually make people sicker in the short term.
