Francis slams 'snake tactics' of fake news

He called for "education for truth" that would help people discern, evaluate and understand news in order to recognise the "sly and risky form of seduction that worms its way into the heart with false and alluring arguments".

Fake news is so effective, he said, because it mimics real news but uses "non-existent or distorted data" to deceive and manipulate.

The pope has also complained in the past about one-sided reporting of the church which he has referred to as the "sins of the media: disinformation, slander and defamation".

Pope Francis warned on Wednesday against the temptation of fake news, drawing a parallel between ethically compromised journalism and the biblical tale of Adam, Eve, the snake and the forbidden fruit.

He has been accused, in particular, of having a blind spot on the issue of Catholic clergy who sexually abuse children, apparently failing to appreciate the huge damage it has done to lives around the world and failing to take tough action against perpetrators.

The snake's power grows as people limit their sources of information to one outlet, especially if that outlet is a social media platform whose algorithms are based on providing users with more information like they have just read, the pope said.

The document also did not delve into the allegations against Russian Federation for hacking elections in the United States and possibly other countries like Germany and France, through the creation and promotion of false news reports on various social media channels.

During his speech, Pope Francis highlighted the danger of fake news.

Pope Francis says first instance of 'fake news' was in the Bible in new document about combating it

The Pope's message is dated January 24, 2018, the memorial of Saint Francis de Sales, patron saint of journalists.

The Holy Father Francis also said it led only to the spread of arrogance and hatred.

This prompted some of Karadima's victims to hold a press conference where they said it was "offensive and unacceptable to say that we need to provide concrete evidence".

Many popular leaders became victim of false news which they later told that propaganda against them.

He continues: "I would like, then, to invite everyone to promote a journalism of peace". He said that its journalists' mission who are responsible to give constructive information to the public and save them from being victim of any prejudice.

Now along comes no less a figure than Pope Francis to offer guidance, hope and even a little encouragement.

Pope Francis stressed that the key to achieving good journalism is providing authentic and complete information, promoting goodness and generating trust. It is "a journalism committed to pointing out alternatives to the escalation of shouting matches and verbal violence". He advocated what he termed "a journalism of peace", which he said was "truthful and opposed to falsehoods, rhetorical slogans, and sensational headlines".
