Xiaomi beats Samsung to become India's top smartphone vendor: Counterpoint

Xiaomi beats Samsung to become India's top smartphone vendor: Counterpoint

Samsung Electronics is no longer India's top smartphone seller - a title it had held onto for six years. Samsung is a full range player and leads the smartphone business across every segment of the India market in 2017.

According to a report by Counterpoint Research, also released on Wednesday, Xiaomi led smartphone shipments with 25 per cent of the total in the last quarter, ahead of Samsung's 23 per cent.

As such, with both the companies nearly evenly tied in the world's second largest smartphone market, it would be interesting to see who emerges at the top in 2018. Canalys also notes that the Indian smartphone market grew 6 percent in 2017 (YoY), and aside from Xiaomi and Samsung, Vivo, OPPO, and Lenovo are the also included in on the list of top 5 smartphone manufacturers in India.

When sales for the entire calendar year 2017 is taken into account, Samsung is still the topper with 24 percent market share, with Xiaomi trailing behind at 19 percent. The Chinese tech firm is also getting ready to go public, according to reports earlier this month, and that could value the company at up to $100 billion. Multiple factors have contributed to Xiaomi's growth, but the key reason for its current success lies in the autonomy that it granted its Indian unit, letting it run the business locally.

The partnership has been reported after Xiaomi India filed requests with the regulators to enter with more products in the Indian market. Xiaomi beats the South Korean giant, Samsung which was dominating the Indian smartphones industry.

"Samsung's loss comes from its inability to transform its low-priced product portfolio", said Rushabh Doshi of Canalys.

On the other hand, data by Canalys suggests that Xiaomi has shipped around 8.2 million units in Q4.

As per GfK data, which is based on actual sales, Samsung's volume market share in the October-December 2014 quarter was 34.3%.

Chinese brands have disrupted the competitive landscape of India's smartphone segment in the past year, according to Tarun Pathak, associate director at Counterpoint. It now boasts three of the country's five most popular smartphones.

Meanwhile, Samsung reacted to the Canalys report saying it was still the undisputed number one leader in the smartphone market in India.

Feature phones, which offer basic functions like making calls, sending texts and browsing the internet, hold the largest share of the Indian mobile phone market because they are cheaper than smartphones. And Xiaomi hiring people from Samsung and other companies to capture a bigger pie in the offline space.
