NCAA warned about MSU back in 2010

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) president knew about sexual abuse to gymnasts at Michigan State University since 2010, according to a report released Friday.

ESPN's Outside the Lines published a report Friday that outlined a history of mishandling sexual assault allegations within Michigan State's athletic department.

Emmert responded to Redmond less than a month later with a letter, which the NCAA sent MLive.com, highlighting the NCAA's initiatives to ensure proper student-athlete conduct. The accused - one of whom Redmond says confessed to the rape - reportedly remained at MSU with no clear punishment from the school, athletic department or NCAA.

She questioned how the school handled a police report a woman filed accusing two MSU basketball players of sexual assault. An earlier report of similar violence involving two other MSU basketball players also went un-redressed. At that time, there were at least 37 reports of athletes sexually assaulting women in the two years prior. But Redmond also suggests that the NCAA president, who once said that "one sexual assault is one too many", essentially resigned himself to the notion that the NCAA "can't be state actors". I took her concerns very seriously, found her thoughts and advice constructive, and subsequently asked her to join an upcoming event we were planning, the NCAA's first Violence Prevention Summit in April 2011. "He met with me, which was great and I appreciated that".

Text of an email sent by NCAA President to the NCAA Board of Governors on Saturday.

Michigan State's handling of sex abuse allegations against former university sports doctor Larry Nassar are under increasing scrutiny and both school President Lou Anna Simon and athletic director Mark Hollis stepped down in the past week. "I think Mark Emmert came in with the right tone but quickly realized 'there's not a lot I can do here". You do kind of get the fox guarding the hen house mentality.

And now, the NCAA will enter the picture. He wrote that he discussed her policy proposal with senior leadership but noted the NCAA doesn't have jurisdiction to investigate criminal complaints.

"They shouldn't ignore the whistleblowers, or dismiss them", Redmond said.
