Daniel Sturridge closing in on loan switch to Newcastle

Daniel Sturridge closing in on loan switch to Newcastle

Newcastle have made an enquiry about taking Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge on loan as the transfer window draws to a close.

The Liverpool striker has hardly featured this season and is known to be keen to gain regular first team football in a bid to strengthen his claim to a place in Gareth Southgate's England side for this summer's World Cup.

Liverpool were happy to keep Sturridge at Anfield, given they are still involved in the Champions League and are trying to secure a top-four spot in the Premier League.

Sturridge has attracted interest from Inter and Sevilla, but The Times report that Newcastle are closing in on a deal.

The move comes with the club's pursuit of Feyenoord's Nicolai Jorgensen having hit an impasse over the two clubs' respective valuations of the player.

Birmingham-born Sturridge is West Brom's second signing of the day, following the loan arrival of Egypt defender Ali Gabr from Zamalek, and he is happy to be back in his home region.

United were understood to be prepared to pay a loan fee of around £1.5million and also cover his £120,000-a-week wages.

Having played for England just one in 2017, while also failing to make the most recent squad, Sturridge will be targeting first-team football in his attempt to make the plane to Russian Federation for the 2018 World Cup.

Sturridge has asked to leave Liverpool after falling down the pecking order at Anfield and was left out of the squad for the 3-2 defeat to West Brom in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday.
