Phillies won't be seeing anymore of Chief Wahoo in Cleveland

"While we recognize many of our fans have a longstanding attachment to Chief Wahoo, I'm ultimately in agreement with Commissioner Manfred's desire to remove the logo from our uniforms in 2019". There aren't many things in MLB more ridiculous than a primarily white crowd of Atlanta baseball fans doing the tomahawk chop while doing a stereotypical "war chant" straight from an old Western movie. After moving to Cleveland, they used four different names from 1900-1914.

The decision has the support of the Major League Baseball, which has urged the team to decrease its use of the logo in recent years.

Every year, groups of Native Americans and their supporters have protested outside the stadium before the home opener in hopes of not only getting the team to abolish Chief Wahoo but to change the Indians' nickname, which they feel is an offensive depiction of their race. The skin color has changed, the nose has been made smaller, but nonetheless, the logo still shows someone with red skin, a feather in his cap and teeth whose size have been grossly over exaggerated.

The Indians began using a similar logo in 1946, but changed it to the current Chief Wahoo one in 1950.

Since the beginning of the decade, the usage of Wahoo slowly decreased.

Shapiro eventually left the Indians to work for the Toronto Blue Jays where he found himself in the spotlight again over the logo thanks to a legal challenge made in Canada, hoping to prevent the Indians from wearing clothing with the logo during a 2016 playoff series against the Blue Jays.

It should go without saying that sports teams should not use racist caricatures of Native Americans as mascots, but obviously some teams and fans don't mind perpetuating negative stereotypes and appropriating other cultures.

Cleveland won't break away from Wahoo in an instant, however.

However, the team will continue to sell merchandise adorned with Chief Wahoo in northeast OH, a decision the AP says was made to keep trademark rules in place. He later admitted that he was "bothered" by the Chief Wahoo logo.

"If they acknowledge that 'the logo is no longer appropriate for on-field use in Major League Baseball, ' what's the excuse for waiting until 2019?" he tweeted. Though it won't be for sale on merchandise through Major League Baseball and it won't appear on jerseys, caps, or in Progressive Field where the Indians play, items with the logo will still be available locally, in stores across northern OH and in the team's shop.

The Indians and the NFL's Washington Redskins were two of the long-time holdouts in the shift away from Native American mascots and logos by many teams and universities.
