Groundhog Day 2018: Did Punxsutawney Phil See His Shadow This Year?

Groundhog Day 2018: Did Punxsutawney Phil See His Shadow This Year?

Add one more year to that winter count.

On Friday, Americans across the nation learned the fate of spring 2018 as news cameras and onlookers gather3e around groundhog Punxsutawney Phil in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to find out how much longer we can expect winter to last. For the current weather forecast in your area, check out your local National Weather Service forecast office.

It is not uncommon for Potomac Phil's "predictions" - translated by DeNu - to follow those of his fellow groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil.

Sussex County is home, at Space Farms, to weather-predicting groundhog Stonewall Jackson V who comes from a long line of oracular groundhogs- all named Stonewall Jackson.

People gathered at Gobbler's Knob at 3 a.m. ET to await the decision announced around 7:25 a.m. ET. If he does not see his shadow, then it'll signify an early spring.

Tradition says that if the groundhog doesn't see its shadow, spring is right around the corner. The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club believes Phil has been alive for more than 120 years.

The tradition came to North America when German immigrants arrived in what is now the eastern state of Pennsylvania.

Canadians celebrate Groundhog Day, too.

How is Groundhog Day celebrated? Despite the claim that the groundhog has the ability to predict if spring will come early, many people question how accurate Phil's weather predictions are. Given Phil's percentages, this is controversial.

Now, before you start thinking that its all a bunch of groundhogwash, you best know the "science" behind this. That's about 65 miles (about 100 kilometers) northeast of Pittsburgh. It has a population of less than 6,000 and was founded in 1818. That's the question that will be on everyone's minds as they awake early Friday, which also happens to be Groundhog Day.

Ever since the movie "Groundhog Day", starring Bill Murray, was released in 1993, attendance at the annual event has skyrocketed.

He and his news team get caught in a blizzard and must stay in town overnight. Andie MacDowell stars as Murray's love interest and producer Rita.
