North Korean Nuclear Weapons Parts Acquired Through Berlin Alleges German Intelligence Head

Germany's intelligence chief revealed North Korea to have been using its Berlin embassy to get hold of technology to develop its nuclear and arsenal programmes.

The disclosures were made by Mr Maassen in an interview with NDR television for a report that is to be aired in full on Monday.

Although the exact nature of the technology was not specified, the intelligence chief said it would have civilian and military uses. The agency believes the tech was used for Pyongyang's missile and nuclear programs.

Massen said that German authorities suspect portions of Pyongyang's weapons program were "acquired through shadow buyers or shadow markets overseas, which they then bought in Germany".

Hans-Georg Maassen, head of the Bundesamt fur Verfassungsschutz (BfV), said: "We have noticed that so many procurement activities have taken place from the embassy".

"When we detect something of this sort, we prevent it", he said.

"If we find such things, we stop it, but we cannot guarantee that this can be prevented in all cases", Massen said, according to a press release cited by CNN".

Germany's domestic intelligence agency obtained clues on the technology procurements in 2016 and previous year, according to an investigation by ARD.

North Korea has resisted global pressure to slow down or stop its rapidly developing ballistic missile and nuclear weapons programs.

A United Nations report seen by the news agency on Friday said North Korea had managed to earn some $200 million previous year by flouting restrictions on coal, steel, iron and petroleum exports.
