Supersampling, UI Updates, and More

The next PlayStation 4 firmware update will make the PS4 Pro a lot more like the Xbox One X. The upcoming software version 5.50 adds a super sampling mode to the PS4 Pro. What the latter includes is obvious, but the new parental settings let parents limit how much child accounts can play for day. Sony wrote, "If needed, the family manager/guardians can apply playtime restrictions to make sure that the child is only playing for a set amount of time or within set playable hours". The child will receive notifications telling them when the time is about to expire so they can save and quit their game.

With this feature, parents and guardians will also have the option to automatically log the child out of their PS4 once their allocated gaming time is over. Speaking of music, you'll be able to listen to tunes in the background while streaming games on PS Now. Following this, Sony details several of the UI improvements coming in Update 5.50, starting with a "This PS4" tab that lists all applications installed on a PS4, and a tab with players' names/avatars showing all apps purchased with their PSN ID. As someone who participates in numerous betas, trials, and demos, my library is a mess - filled with applications I'll never use more than that initial period. If you want to create a PS4 background from your own images on a USB stick, you'll be able to do that now too. You can also zoom and crop your images so they look ideal on your dashboard.

Other features in this patch include new Quick Menu improvements (shortcut buttons for volume and Pause/Play when listening to music, faster access to individual friends) and customization options for team pages in Tournaments.

Supersampling Mode adds an option that can be toggled in Settings that allows owners of 1080p TVs, or lower, to get a sharper image in some games.

The PS Plus tab also gives you a clear indication of the PlayStation Plus games you own, complete with a new lock icon that appears when you no longer subscribe.

Usefully, there's a new PS Plus tab in the Library, which shows you which games you own from the PS Plus monthly free games.

Quick Menu Enhancements: This allows users to quickly access specific friends from their custom list. Music controls for Spotify, the media player and USB music player apps are all coming to the main menu. Here's Sony's official blurb, courtesy of the PlayStation Blog. You can also now manually delete notifications.

"Please note performance will vary, as games are optimised differently to take advantage of the power of the PS4 Pro". This process involves a game being rendered at a higher resolution (up to 4K, in the case of certain PS4 games) and then downscaled to your display's resolution, thereby providing greater clarity.
