Premier stands behind boycott of BC wine

What seems unreasonable is the reaction of Alberta premier Rachel Notley, who alludes to a non-existent "illegality", and is withdrawing from talks to purchase B.C. electricity (likely from the Site C dam - another can of worms).

The BC premier continues to insist his previous comments were never meant to be provocative and he told reporters he and Notley have a good, working relationship.

"I take that very seriously, and I will be resolute in protecting the interests of this great province".

"I hope that you will consider the severity and outcome of the actions your minister has proposed and that you will accept my offer to meet with you to discuss these and any other matters relating to the operations of our company in B.C".

The Notley government slapped an immediate import ban on B.C. wines - a $70-million a year export - in response to her B.C. NDP counterparts announcing that Kinder Morgan's Trans Mountain pipeline would need to undergo further scientific review and consultation before reaching its full capacity this month.

All Alberta oil to B.C. travels on Kinder Morgan's Trans Mountain system.

The boycott over B.C. wines is being felt in the Gas City.

Although winemaking is nowhere near as big a deal, economically, as pumping oil and although Alberta accounts for just under three per cent of B.C.'s wine sales, symbolically Notley struck a solid blow on Tuesday.

A common sentiment among those in the wine and hospitality industry in Alberta following this news is the devastating effect this will have on the farmers, families and small business (winery) owners in British Columbia as well as the import agents in Alberta whose portfolios include B.C. wine and not least, Alberta consumers. A boycott of Alberta beef is not on, said Horgan.

"I don't necessarily believe that food security and agricultural sovereignty ... should be used as political bargaining chips".

Horgan harrumphed that we should take his government to court if we're unhappy, But that advice cuts both ways.

"The wine industry is important in BC".

Notley's call was echoed by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

"The tools in her toolbox that she is now looking for will be her decisions and her government's decision to make, and whether or not they are appropriate or not I am not going to judge, but they certainly do speak to the severity of the issue and the importance of the issue that the B.C. government has started", he said.

"I'm here for B.C., not Alberta".

Cory Morgan, who owns a pub in Priddis, says he's on board with the idea, removing all B.C. offerings from his menu.

If one of the goals of a negotiating strategy is to make the other side sweat a bit, Notley's wine ban was effective.

"This is a crisis that is escalating and the Canadian economy will suffer", he said. "That said, investor patience is a whole different matter". "Even if it stops tomorrow, I have to go back in and re-sell my brands back into every liquor store". If B.C.is not going to welcome any additional oil shipments across its territory, either by rail or pipeline, then we are going to have our government-owned liquor wholesaling monopoly stop bringing in B.C. wine.

"People that I know in Alberta, they don't agree with this approach. I don't think that is a fair thing".

He said that he doesn't sell much B.C. wine, but most of his liquor and wine is imported from overseas through the Port of Vancouver during the winter months from October to April.

"In the coming days, the Government of Alberta will be monitoring the situation and preparing further action". "We do have some sales in Alberta".
