Syria says Israeli warplanes attacked its military near Damascus

Ten towns, home to almost 400,000 people trapped by the violence and a tightening siege, were bombed or shelled. "No area at all in Ghouta is safe". The attack followed two others in the past week that killed at least 10 people, including several children. There were certain incidents which were inflated by Arab media, belonging to opponents of Bashar al-Assad regime in the region.

"Our air defence systems blocked them and destroyed majority".

According to UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, 68 civilians, including 21 children, have died as a result of Turkey's actions in Afrin.

The casualties occurred when airstrikes hit Idlib's Ma'arrat al-Numan district Tuesday night, Mustafa Haj Youssef, head of the White Helmets civil defense agency in Idlib, said.

Activists and rescue workers reported at least 28 civilians, including six children, were killed on Monday in Ghouta, where almost 40 airstrikes hit the suburb that is the last opposition stronghold in Damascus.

The U.N. mission in Damascus warned Tuesday of "dire consequences" to the humanitarian crises in Syria, identifying seven areas needing urgent relief.

Meanwhile, the lead investigator of a UN-mandated Commission of Inquiry on Syria said his team was looking into reports that bombs allegedly containing weaponised chlorine were used against civilians on two recent occasions, in the rebel held towns of Saraqeb, in Idlib, and Douma, in Eastern Ghouta.

Idlib and Eastern Ghouta are two of four "de-escalation zones" which had been agreed upon by both sides of the conflict at peace talks in Kazakhstan previous year.

He described Tuesday's bloodshed as the deadliest since efforts to broker a truce in Ghouta failed and the government intensified its operations against the enclave six weeks ago.

Syria remains locked in a devastating conflict that began in 2011, when the Assad regime cracked down on demonstrators with disproportionate force and unexpected ferocity.

Civilians had been bracing for more raids as the regime appeared intent on ratcheting up the pressure on Eastern Ghouta, a rebel pocket on the capital's doorstep.

In December, Israeli fighter jets bombed areas near Damascus including a scientific research center and warehouses where weapons and ammunition of the regime and its allies were stocked, a monitor said.

United Nations officials accuse the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad of making it almost impossible for convoys to get access to people in dire need, adding that bureaucratic red tape is holding up the visas needed to deliver humanitarian aid.

In an interview with French daily Le Figaro published on January 31, Macron warned that if Turkey's ongoing operation in northern Syria turns into an "invasion" it would be a "real problem" for France. Turkey has agreed to set up 12 observation posts in Idlib and neighboring provinces.

The Idlib area is home to more than 1.1 million of Syria's 6.5 million internally displaced people, many of whom escaped other formerly opposition-held areas after they were overrun by government forces, according to United Nations figures.

At least three civilians have also been killed by rocket fire from Syria onto Turkish territory.
