Military Parade? Your Authoritarianism Is Showing, Trump

Pentagon spokesman Charlie Summers said Tuesday that Trump asked for the military parade, adding that the planning process was in its "infancy". "We've been putting together some options", Defence Secretary James Mattis told reporters during a White House press briefing.

Trump apparently wants to display his country's military capabilities to Americans and to other countries. "He has asked the Department of Defence to explore a celebration at which all Americans can show their appreciation", Sanders said.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said the Pentagon was considering options for the parade and cited Trump's "affection for the military".

"This is being worked at the highest levels of the military", a Pentagon insider told The Washington Post.

Trump was on French President Emmanuel Macron's guest list on Bastille Day a year ago, and praised the French military parade calling it "one of the greatest parades" he has witnessed. He later called the spectacle one of the greatest parades he had ever seen. Nevertheless, it's an embarrassing waste of time, which is why Care2 members are signing this petition, Tell President Trump No Military Parade. "I mean, we're going to be showing our military".

The military wants to do this on Veterans Day, which will coincide with the hundredth anniversary of the end of WWI, to give this thing the veneer of not being a political affair cooked up by a flagging president.

The Washington parade, dubbed the National Victory Celebration, cost about $12 million (about $21.8 million in today's dollars).

Though the USA has held a few military parades throughout its history, Slate points out that the distinction is that these events were held in celebration after successfully winning a war, such as World War I, World War II and the Spanish-American War.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont who caucuses with Democrats, said that "what (Trump) should have learned from France is about their health care system, not about their military parades". But he says they'll be sent to the White House for a decision.

"I don't think it's a particularly good idea", Kennedy said.

We don't do military parades. However, the official also said that Mr. Trump is adamant about doing "something that highlights the service and sacrifice of the military" that would serve as "a unifying moment for the country".

As commander-in-chief, Trump could order the military to carry out a parade without any further debate.

Critics have objected to the event's cost, likely to be in the millions. USA officials say it would also be a logistical challenge to bring thousands of troops, tanks and aircraft to Washington.

In January, last year, the newly appointed Trump administration was contemplating having a "Red Square/North Korea-style parade" for the inauguration, a source revealed to the Huffington Post.
