Fidayeen storm Army camp in Jammu; 2 soldiers, 2 militants killed

He said so far a JCO and an NCO, both from Jammu and Kashmir have been martyred and nine others, including five women and children, injured.

"Operations will continue till all the terrorist are apprehended or killed", an army official said.

Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra expressed concern over the militant attack at Sunjwan Army Camp here today, and reiterated his advise about the need for an uncompromising audit of all security establishments.

The operation continued through out the day as the Army acted with caution and restraint to safeguard the lives of unarmed soldiers and their family members in their houses inside the camp.

Mehbooba paid rich tributes to the slain Army men, praised their valour and sympathised with the bereaved families of soldiers. The area was cordoned off and schools closed.

He informed the House that during the operation, Colonel Rohit Solanki, Havaldar Abdul Hamid and Lance Naik Bahadur Singh and Neha daughter of Subedar Madan Lal Chowdhary were injured.

A defence statement said that most of the families have been evacuated from the junior commissioned officers quarters where the terrorists had entered.

In Saturday's attack, the terrorists struck before dawn and managed to sneak into the camp from the rear side of the base after a brief exchange of fire with the sentry on its periphery. At least three persons, including an Army personnel and his daughter, have been injured, officials said. "We are with the government and the Army", he said.

Sunjuwan Brigade camp is just 5 to 6 km away from the heart of the Jammu city.

Even before the militant attack on the Pathankot airbase in January 2016, security agencies had intercepted conversations between four JeM operatives and their handlers in Pakistan that suggested an imminent attack on a defence installation in Punjab.

The Minister said the exact number of fidayeen is still not known but as per the initial call received at Police Control Room (PCR) Jammu at around 4.55 this morning, four to five terrorists are involved in the attack.

Rao was referring to Omar's earlier tweet wherein he had said the party would not say anything more on the issue of Lone's pro-Pakistan slogans in the Assembly. It came a few hours later when militants sneaked into the airbase and killed six security personnel and one civilian.
