Trump's approval rating tops Obama's at same point in presidency

A majority of Americans say special counsel Robert MuellerRobert Swan MuellerSasse: US should applaud choice of Mueller to lead Russian Federation probe MORE's investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation is fair and should continue without interference, a Marist College poll reports.

The Rasmussen survey, the organization's daily Presidential Tracking Poll, also found 34 percent strongly approve of the way Trump is performing and 43 percent strongly disapprove.

40 percent of American voters approve of the job Trump is doing - the highest since a poll taken June 29, 2017. And they also mirror other recent polls that showed a slight upswing in Mr. Trump's approval ratings. On December 15, shortly after the Republican-backed tax reform bill had passed, Rasmussen had Trump at just 40% approval, some of the lowest numbers of his presidency. That's a net approval rating of negative 21.1 percent.

Voters contend Trump is doing more to divide the country than to unite it by 60 percent to 35 percent. The State of the Union address, for example, historically provides presidents with an opportunity to set the narrative and frame their accomplishments before a massive primetime audience.

"Given the overwhelmingly negative coverage President Trump has received (in the 90% negative range) and the overwhelmingly positive coverage President Obama enjoyed (remember the late night comedian who complained that there was nothing to joke about early in Obama's presidency?), these approval polls reveal a public that has tuned out the mainstream media's nattering against the president", he wrote.

Quinnipiac University ran the poll February 2-5, surveying 1,333 voters nationwide. The margin for sampling error is ±3.3 percent points among all voters; it is larger for subgroups.
