Weinstein statue appears in HW ahead of Oscars

The statue depicts Weinstein sitting on a couch while clad in a bathrobe, holding an Oscar in a suggestively phallic manner.

A giant golden statue of disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein greeted locals along Hollywood Boulevard on Thursday in the lead up to the 90th annual Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday. It was created by Los Angeles street artist Plastic Jesus and features Weinstein sitting on the couch in a satin dressing gown, pyjama pants, and slippers, clutching an Oscar.

Ginger-the artist behind the naked Donald Trump statues that made waves in 2016-then explained where the idea of posing Weinstein on the couch came from.

"For many years the exploitation of many hopefuls and established names in the industry was brushed under the carpet with their complaints of harassment and sexual abuse being ignored or worse", Plastic Jesus told the Hollywood Reporter.

The phrase "casting couch" used to describe the demand of sexual favors for work, may seem a relic of a bygone era but is "still alive and well", he said.

One thing's for sure: the Oscars are very much worth the watch this year. "Hopefully now in the light of recent allegations, against many leading figures in Hollywood the industry will clean up its act".

Plastic Jesus said he and Monroe first considered a standing Weinstein statue but quickly chose to incorporate a chaise lounge.

It will be on display this weekend, weather permitting.

Mr. Weinstein was forced to step down from the company he co-founded in October 2017 after an exposé by The New York Times detailed a slew of sexual misconduct claims against him spanning decades.

He's denied all allegations of non-consensual sex, but has apologized for what he called "the way I've behaved with colleagues in the past".
