3 hostages held by armed individual at California veterans home

The Veterans Home of California, Fresno is taking some extra precautions to protect its residents and staff on Friday in the wake of a hostage situation at a veterans home in Napa County.

"Law enforcement is at the Yountville Veteran's Home right now following reports of gunfire". It was not immediately clear if there were any injuries and there was little information about the shooter. Although no casualties have yet been reported by law enforcement, Napa County Fire Captain Chase Beckham revealed that a hostage situation is unfolding, and the gunman has barricaded himself within the center.

CHP aerial resources were on the scene and a SWAT team was on the way.

Larry Kamer says his wife, Devereaux Smith, is a fundraiser for the nonprofit Pathway Home. The home has been on lock down since and those in the area have been asked to shelter in place.

Jan Thornton of Vallejo is among hundreds of relatives anxious about their loved ones at a Northern California veterans home that was locked down after reports of an active shooter.

A woman who lives on the property tells KTVU she is safe, and is now on lockdown. Amanda Vargas, whose husband is the chief of finance in the home's administrative building, said she's been in touch with her husband and he is safe.

We will continue to update this post as further details arrive. People on a nearby golf course were evacuated when the shooting began.

Yountville Elementary School was on lockdown briefly.

Law enforcement from the Napa County, Marin and the California Highway Patrol have surrounded the Veterans Home of California in Yountville, which is the largest veterans' residence community in the United States.

Veterans of World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Desert Storm, and Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom now live at the home, according to the website.
