Phillies sign Arrieta: Winners and Losers of the deal

Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reported details of Arrieta's deal with the Phillies.

According to multiple reports, the 2015 Cy Young Award victor has agreed to a three-year, $75 million deal with the Phillies on Sunday. They also landed Carlos Santana for $60 million. Signing Arrieta is an indication that club officials believe the rebuild is nearing an end and contention is close. The Phillies have always been a rumored landing spot for Arrieta, along with the Nationals and Padres.

Adding Arrieta to the rotation along with Aaron Nola, who posted a 3.54 ERA with 184 strikeouts in 168 innings, gives the Phillies an excellent duo to build around. During the 2015 season when the Cubs won the World Series and Arrieta earned the NL Cy Young Award, the dominant pitcher fanned 236 batters.

Arrieta had a 4.67 ERA in first 16 starts last season, but finished strong, going 7-4 with a 2.26 ERA in his final 14 outings. Nick Pivetta and Ben Lively have each shown potential but have been inconsistent. He became the odd man out with the Cubs after the team signed Yu Darvish to a long-term deal in February, then needed to wait until just weeks before the start of the season to secure a job. It's a deal with an average-annual-value Arrieta expected, but perhaps not the money or years he expected. Likewise, the Phillies needed a veteran presence on their starting rotation and they found it at a team-friendly cost as well. The Phillies weren't about to play in that realm, but they made it clear to Arrieta's representatives that they'd be open to something in the three-year range.
