Fighting Tuberculosis: A Global Health Emergency

Fighting Tuberculosis: A Global Health Emergency

Today, President and PM have also come out to address the issue of Tuberculosis in India., urging it to stop by 2050.

Day before the World Tuberculosis Day on March 24, the Prime Minister set the deadline to eradicate the epidemic from India, which accounts for 25 per cent of the global tuberculosis cases.

The 2018 theme for World Tuberculosis Day is "Wanted: Leaders for a TB-Free World".

"Now is the time to make commitments become actions, we need increased and sustained financing", Mr. Tedros spelled out, calling World Tuberculosis Day an opportunity "to mobilize political and social commitment for accelerated progress to end TB".

In 2016, 10.4 million people fell ill with TB, and 1.7 million died from the disease (including 0.4 million among people with HIV).

Tuberculosis is caused by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis germ and generally affects a person's lungs. Unfortunately many people with TB don't realise they have it, and assume their symptoms are down to something else so they delay going to see their GP. Despite this, TB still remains a serious public health problem with a steady incline for the number of cases and deaths over the last 10 years.

The global response to tuberculosis has saved millions of lives; TB treatment saved 53 million lives between 2000 and 2016.

Interruptions can exponentially raise the patient's risk of developing multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), which is harder to treat.

About one-quarter of the world's population has latent TB, which means people have been infected by TB bacteria but are not (yet) ill with the disease and can not transmit the disease.

Invoking the penalty clauses, the government hoped, would increase the notification rate from the private sector as almost 10 lakh TB patients are now not on the government radar, which means their treatment quality and duration remains a suspect.

TB was once a disease that affected people from all walks of life - including Frederic Chopin, Eleanor Roosevelt and George Orwell.

World Health Organization says that "When it comes to the biggest worldwide killer that kills through a single infectious agent, Tuberculosis (TB) comes second only to HIV/AIDS". People will usually be coughing up blood containing sputum; they'll have a high fever, night sweats and weight loss. The government provides free sputum examination for TB. Moreover, the DH has also actively collaborated in research with local and overseas organisations in order to improve the chances of being cured, shorten the treatment time and achieve a breakthrough in TB prevention. India is the leading country which has the most cases of Tuberculosis followed by Indonesia, China, Philippines, Pakistan, Nigeria, and South Africa.

Unfortunately the standard treatment for TB has been the same all over the world for years.

Many individuals and groups face a combination of risk factors for TB. Following the successful WHO Ministerial Conference in Moscow and the upcoming United Nations high-level meeting in September 2018, world leaders seem more committed than ever to tackle the TB epidemic.
