CT students call for an end to gun violence at nation's capital

Seventeen Excel students had gathered outside Baltimore City Hall to catch a bus to the March For Our Lives rally against gun violence in Washington, organized after 17 students and faculty were killed in a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., last month.

IN high school students protested with signs saying "Protect Kids, Not Guns" as part of the national March for Our Lives event to press for gun control.

The push for CDC research on gun violence has received new momentum following a mass shooting at a Florida high school in February.

A GoFundMe page set up for the event has raised more than $3 million for the marches and victims of the Parkland, Florida, shooting and their families. "We are firsthand witnesses to the kind of devastation that gross incompetence and political inaction can produce", wrote the students, who work for the Stoneman Douglas school newspaper The Eagle Eye.

The proposed safety "solution" may come like a rock to the face for gun control supporters, thousands of whom across the country will come together Saturday for the March for Our Lives.

"We were invited out by other survivors" of shootings in Virginia, Tucson and Aurora, Colorado, said Gooze, who will meet them for breakfast in D.C. on Saturday. Their response to the shooting deaths of 17 people at their South Florida school has moved other US teenagers to similarly call for gun-control reform.

Organizers of Saturday's nationwide demonstrations have urged the reinstatement of a national ban on military-style semiautomatic "assault weapons" and high-capacity ammunition magazines as well as background checks for all gun sales.

Pop star Paul McCartney was among the marchers, telling CNN that he had a personal stake in gun control. "We want to start feeling safe".

This same weapon that I carried in combat has been used in 11 mass shootings in the past decade to gun down Americans on our own soil, many of them young children and teenagers.

"You can't just stand silently and watch your neighbour go through a crisis like this".

Federal agents and D.C. police will be deployed to provide security for the crowd, which is expected to equal the size of the Women's March a year ago and the Obama presidential inaugurations.

"I think it's a little ridiculous", Benjamin Johnson, 21, from NY, said of the March for Our Lives event.

"I think that the student who are organizing in my district, here today in Washington and around the country are going to make a true difference in this debate", she said.

Before the march, a choir made up of students from various schools in the region performed on stage at Coolidge Park.
