Strikes in France: Emmanuel Macron's Approval Rates Falls, 200000 Protest Reforms

Macron's approval rating decline comes amid nationwide protests where tens of thousands of nurses, teachers, airline controllers, train conductors and a host of other public sector workers went on strike yesterday in solidarity against Macron's reforms.

Public services workers, including teachers and healthcare staff, made a decision to walk out in French cities to express their anger over the government's plan to reduce their number by 120,000 within five years and expand the use of short-term contracts.

U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan has invited French President Emmanuel Macron to address Congress when he visits Washington in April, Ryan's office said on Wednesday.

Only 40 percent of high-speed TGV trains and around a third of commuter trains were operating, CNN's Jim Bitterman reported from Paris' Gare Saint-Lazare railway station.

Police scuffled with protesters in Paris and fired teargas and water cannon in the western city of Nantes as strikes broke out across France on Thursday in a challenge to President Emmanuel Macron's economic reforms.

The Paris Metro was running normally, but suburban trains were affected by the strike.

Civil servants are also expected to protest a string of reforms - including planned cuts to public-sector headcount by 2022 - on Thursday, with hospital workers and teachers joining some 140 demonstrations around the country.

Electricity generation dropped by more than three gigawatts, the equivalent of three nuclear reactors, as those workers joined the strike, stoking government fears that the work stoppages could spread.

Macron aims to eliminate 120,000 civil-service jobs, privatize the national railways and stop hiring new railway workers during his 5-year tenure.

Separately, at Air France, staff including pilots and cabin crew will strike tomorrow seeking a 6% salary hike, and have already promised another strike for March 30.

The company workers plan to strike for 12 days per month from April through June. A growing number of people also said they thought Macron is launching "too many reforms", the poll found.

What it means: France is changing.

Easyjet added in a statement: "We expect that there will be delays and cancellations due to the industrial action, therefore we advise all customers to check the status of their flight on our flight tracker".

A police officer who took the place of a female hostage is 'fighting for his life, Macron said in a televised address following the shootings in Carcassonne and Trebes, hailing the man as a hero.

His government says the behemoth rail operator in particular is crying out for reform, saddled with ‎€46.6 billion (RM225.32 billion) of debt.

Retirees have come out to demonstrate over tax changes that reduce their pensions and prison guards staged almost two weeks of protests in January over security risks and poor pay.
