Trump's Bolton appointment sends 'thundering message to the world'

The appointment of John Bolton to be the Trump administration's third national security adviser in the past 14 months, signals a more confrontational approach to the world from an already belligerent regime.

Although it's unclear if Bolton would get on board with "the staff purge his allies and advisors are pushing", some names that have been reportedly floated around include deputy national security advisor for strategy Nadia Schadlow and McMaster deputy Ricky Waddell.

In a late Thursday statement, Bolton called the appointment "an honor", saying he looks "forward to working with President Trump and his leadership team" to "make our country safer at home and stronger overseas".

"I am pleased to announce that, effective 4/9/18, John Bolton will be my new National Security Adviser", Trump said on Twitter. McMaster 'will always remain my friend, ' the USA president tweeted. Bolton's forest of op-eds trumpet his hawkish views. He will take the job on April 9.

What happened? Well, in the time since then, Bolton has made a lot of appearances on Fox News, and.well, there isn't an "and", there's just that.

As New York Times columnist Michelle Goldberg recently observed, one after another, the people who are supposed to be "checking Donald Trump's worst instincts and most erratic whims" have departed.

Or that it's awfully risky to put Iran back on the path to the bomb just when Trump is preparing to meet with the leader of North Korea. Bolton is a full-blown warmonger who helped push the US into war with Iraq and who strongly believes the country should preemptively go to war with both North Korea and Iran.

Former president Jimmy Carter apparently isn't a fan of John Bolton.

Garrett Marquis, a spokesman for Bolton, said on Sunday that Bolton "doesn't respond to propaganda from a government long included on the United States' list of state sponsors of terrorism."There was no immediate comment from the White House".

Last week's firing of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and nomination of CIA Director Mike Pompeo to replace him.

This suggested approach runs counter to previous agreements between the USA and the DPRK, including a joint statement issued in September 2005 following the fourth round of the Six-Party Talks, which said the North Korean nuclear issue would have to be solved step by step. Two sources familiar with Bolton's relationship with Trump said one of the big unknowns was how Bolton's approach to Russian Federation will go over with the president or if he's even aware of those differences. The timeline was expedited as they both felt it was important to have the new team in place, instead of constant speculation.

Trump's first national security adviser, Michael Flynn, was sacked for lying about contacts with the Russian embassy and has since pleaded guilty for making false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This work and those achievements will ensure that America builds on its economic and military advantages. This, too, gave a shape to Trump's impulse that he will very likely find flattering, but also one that might move Trump towards Bolton's position.

Bolton's pick rounds out a team that in Trump's second year will be compromised nearly entirely of hawks whose public views on national security veer decidedly to the right.

"Throughout my career, it has been my greatest privilege to serve alongside extraordinary service members and dedicated civilians". Bolton, who has a reputation as a foreign policy hawk, will replace H.R. McMaster. When nominated by Bush to serve as ambassador to the United Nations - about which Bolton said "if it lost 10 stories, it wouldn't make a bit of difference" - not even Republicans would support him.
