Kim Jong-un Visits China, More Hopes for Korean Peace

In this May 30, 2000, photo from North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency, distributed by Korea News Service, leader Kim Jong Il chats with Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China, during his unofficial visit in China. A triumph for Trump on the nuclear issue could ensure the security of a Chinese client state in Pyongyang, draw South Korea into China's orbit and weaken USA influence in the region. For six decades, North Korea's conventional military capabilities were enough to persuade USA presidents of the need to maintain a strong military presence in South Korea.

"China is North Korea's lifeline, so the notion, from a Chinese perspective, that Kim Jong-un could have had these other two meetings before meeting with Xi Jinping, I think the Chinese just thought that is not going to happen", said Paul Haenle, director of the Carnegie-Tsinghua Center in Beijing and the former White House representative to North Korea denuclearization talks from 2007-2009.

Lu Chao, head of the Center for North Korean and Republic of Korea Studies at the Liaoning Academy of Social Sciences, pointed out that while Kim's visit appears to have been an unexpected development for the global community, it was actually a very logical thing. Prior to these events North Korea made a decision to consult its neighbor about these matters.

It was the North Korean leader's first overseas trip since inheriting power after the death of his father, Kim Jong-il, in 2011.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visited Beijing on Tuesday, March 27, arriving onboard a special armored train amid heavy security precautions to meet with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

Kim pledged he was "committed to denuclearisation" on the Korean peninsula, according to China's Xinhua news agency - but added this would depend on South Korea and the U.S. taking what he called "progressive and synchronous measures for the realisation of peace".

"Now there is a good chance that Kim Jong Un will do what is right for his people and for humanity", Trump tweeted, after making note of the way peace and a stop in the proliferation of nuclear arms in the Korean peninsula seemed like a remote possibility.

"There are no plans to initiate a summit between Russian Federation and North Korea, and there are no plans for President Vladimir Putin and Chairman Kim to meet", the Kremlin stated Wednesday.

November 1958: North Korea founder Kim Il Sung visits China, shortly after China withdraws troops from the Korean Peninsula. Kim is already scheduled to visit the Korean Peninsula's demilitarized zone in late April to talk with South Korean President Moon Jae-in. North Korea has repeatedly reneged on previous pledges after receiving the rewards, ditching promises to let global inspectors check its nuclear facilities and others.

Kim's appearance in Beijing involved nearly all the trappings of a state visit, complete with an honour guard and banquet at Beijing's Great Hall of the People. In 2009, it stopped participating in six-party talks.

Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said last month that there would be "no meaningful dialogue" unless North Korea agreed on "complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation". It is this confidence that the USA should focus on ahead of the meeting between Mr Kim and Mr Trump. He has also offered to meet with President Trump, although the location of that proposed summit has not been confirmed.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders called the meeting "evidence" that President Donald Trump's "maximum pressure" campaign against North Korea is producing results.
