Shaking up the Nad Men: Microsoft splits up into 'cloud' and 'edge'

Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella unveiled the company's biggest reorganization in three years, combining the divisions that focus on devices and software for businesses while moving the Windows operating system unit into the cloud operations.

Terry Myerson, executive vice president for the Windows and devices group, is leaving, the company said.

A third engineering group focusing on AI and research, led by Harry Shum will remain, though some pieces have been shifted to Guthrie's newly created team.

Rajesh Jha will "expand his existing responsibilities" to lead a team called Experiences & Devices.

Microsoft is undergoing a major reorganization, shaking up the Windows group as the company prioritizes the injection of artificial intelligence into its products.

The formal relegation of the Windows franchise, said Michael Cusumano, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management, "has been a long time coming". The company managed to turn its individual on-premises Office products into a cloud bundle with Office 365 - which is growing even faster than Microsoft itself expected.

A main fixture on Microsoft's executive team is exiting the company. Most don't appear to be critical-they fix problems in Microsoft Edge more than anything-but one should be welcome news for anyone who uses BitLocker.

This build lets you search the Windows 10 Calendar for events by name, location, people included or words in the event body.

Most of the actual product groups will stay intact as Panos Panay (devices), Joe Belfiore (Windows), Kudo Tsunoda (new experiences and technology), and Brad Anderson (enterprise) will handle their respective divisions within the new group.

Clearly, Microsoft has a few teething problems to iron out of the known users groups facility, but at least its making moves to appease developers keen to work within the Windows ecosystem.

On LinkedIn Thursday, Myerson wrote that he's "filled with gratitude and optimism" for his experiences at Microsoft and what lies ahead.

"With change comes transition, and one transition we have been planning for is for Terry Myerson to pursue his next chapter outside Microsoft", Nadella added. For instance, Nadella said, "we are investing in strategies and tools for detecting and addressing bias in AI systems and implementing new requirements established by the GDPR [General Data Protection Regulation]".
