Troops kill 11 insurgents in Maiduguri

The gun attack took place on Sunday night in Bale Shuwari, a settlement near army barracks on the edge of Maiduguri's inner city, military sources said.

UN's Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Yassine Gaba, said: "The recent weeks have seen a steady continuation of attacks on civilians in the three most conflict-affected states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe, in the north-east of Nigeria", Gaba said.

In February, when more than 100 schoolgirls were returned to Dapchi after being kidnapped by Boko Haram, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari said his government was offering amnesty to "repentant" jihadists.

Meanwhile, a 14 year-old Boko Haram insurgent, Rawa Babagana, has surrendered to troops of Operation Lafiya Dole.

AFP cited local emergency services as saying at least 18 people have been killed, while 84 were wounded in the attack in the villages of Bale Shuwa and Bale Kura.

One soldier was among the dead, the army said in a statement, which added that it had killed six insurgents and "neutralised" seven suicide bombers.

Nwachukwu said the attackers were on a mission to carry out major attack on Maiduguri.

FEW hours after the Federal Government proposed an amnesty for Boko Haram insurgents, about 29 persons lost their lives in two incidents in Maiduguri, Borno State, involving the terrorists and the Nigerian Military, with no fewer than 83 others injured.

The United Nations warned late previous year that areas affected by Boko Haram militancy face humanitarian crisis.

The attacks highlight the challenge the government faces in striking a ceasefire agreement with the jihadist group. The other, led by Abubakar Shekau, is notorious for suicide bombings.

But senior security officials cautioned that reaching any agreement with the group will be hard, as it is split into competing factions with different goals.

The spokesman of the military at Operation Lafiya Dole headquarters, Maiduguri, Onyema Nwachukwu who confirmed the death toll said the insurgents were attempting to infiltrate the state capital through Bille Shuwa and Alikaranti but were confronted by the military.
