Shohei Ohtani gets silent treatment after first career home run

Shohei Ohtani gets silent treatment after first career home run

Just two days after picking up his first major-league win on the mound at Oakland, Ohtani blasted a three-run home run on a 2-2 pitch by Cleveland Indians starter Josh Tomlin in his first plate appearance at Angel Stadium.

Shohei Ohtani hit his first major league home run in his first Angel Stadium at-bat, taking a curtain call after his three-run homer against the Cleveland Indians. Nevertheless, Ohtani has already become the first player since 1920 to both start separate games as a hitter and as a pitcher within the first 10 games of the season. His teammates gave him the cold shoulder at first.

During his first start, he threw six innings, giving up three hits and three runs, but he still got the win.

Trout, Justin Upton and Luis Valbuena also homered for the Angels.

Shohei Ohtani got his first major league home run and his first celebratory ice bath. Rivera hit the Angels' fifth homer of the night, a two-run blast in the eighth inning. Statcast measured the latter hit at 112.8 miles per hour, the hardest hit ball by an Angels player this season.

Through an interpreter, Japan-born Ohtani said, "After getting my first hit out of the way, I felt more comfortable and relaxed". The Babe was playing for the Yankees by that point, but Ohtani matched two other Boston accomplishments with his performance as designated hitter Tuesday. Shoemaker was limited to 14 starts last season and had surgery last August to address nerve pain in his right forearm. Ohtani wasn't done, though, as he finished the game against the Indians with three hits in four at-bats, scoring twice and knocking in three runs, in a 13-2 Angels romp.

The Angels would add another run in the second inning to create a 7-2 advantage early on.
