Bail plea verdict likely after 2 pm

Bail plea verdict likely after 2 pm

After hearing both the sides on the bail plea, District and Sessions Judge Ravindra Kumar Joshi reserved its decision till tomorrow. The actor had spent two nights in the Jodhpur Central Jail after his sentencing on Thursday.

"Salman was given simple food like Dal chapatti and morning meal would have khichdi", said Vikram Singh, Jail Superintendent while briefing media.

Speaking to The Asian Age on phone, advocate Mahesh Bora confirmed this and said, "I received few messages and internet calls asking me to leave Salman's case".

Salman Khan was charged under Section 51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act and the other actors were charged under Section 51 read with Section 149 (unlawful assembly) of the Indian Penal Code.

The actor, who was sentenced on Thursday to five-year imprisonment for killing two blackbucks in a village in Jodhpur on 2 October 1998, was granted bail on Saturday.

Four other Bollywood stars - Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Tabu and Neelam Kothari - who were also accused in the case were acquitted due to lack of evidence.

Salman's counsels reached the court at around 1000 hrs.

But public prosecutor Pokarram Bishnoi contended that this case was different. Regarding her fans, she added, "To them, [he] is a golden-hearted man-child whose charitable trust is reason enough to forgive him for what they consider mere human failings". The state government moved the sessions court on 7 March 2017 challenging the trials court's order of acquittal.

In the hearing today, the prosecution talked about the credibility of the witnesses and hinged the case on the post-mortem report which said that the blackbucks had gunshot wounds.

He pointed out that the investigation agency did not send the blackbuck skin for forensic examination.

Khan was also found guilty of killing gazelles on the same trip and served very brief stints in jail in 2006 and 2007, but was later acquitted on appeal. Followed by the same, there have been constant reports on what has been happening inside and outside the jail premises that has held Salman as a prisoner. The film is set to release on EID this year.

Khan, 52, has starred in more than 90 Hindi-language films, but has also long had a reputation as a Bollywood bad boy, known for his run-ins with the law - including a fatal vehicle accident - and his troubled relationships with women.
