Gareth Bale returned to Zinedine Zidane's line-up while Karim Benzema had to settle for a spot on the bench. However, their lead lasted less than five minutes as Griezmann capitalised on some poor defending to equalise it at 1-1. Better than Paris Saint Germain, better than Manchester City, better than Barcelona.

The most likely explanation is that Zidane was simply giving Ronaldo a breather ahead of their UEFA Champions League clash with Juventus on Wednesday.

The Frenchman also admitted that the training he did in the summer prepared him "really well", physically, for the season ahead, and he is now reaping the rewards at the business end of the season and with the World Cup in Russian Federation looming.

Sergio Ramos nearly snatched a win in injury time but his free-kick was brilliantly clawed out by Oblak to ensure that the points were shared in a result which leaves La Liga leaders Barcelona 11 points clear of Atletico with seven games remaining. He has a lot of space around him and fired a terrific shot from the edge of the box towards the right side of the goal, but the goalkeeper made a brilliant save and stops this one but the rebound fell to Antoine Griezmann and he fired home from close range to make the scoreline 1 - 1. Ronaldo's goal against Atletico was his 20th in his last 10 games in all competitions.

"What we have done in this decade is tremendous, Atletico fans should be proud of how their team is competing".

Nevertheless, a win for the visitors would lift them seven points above Real Madrid and give them a chance of finishing above them at the end of the table; something they have only done 18 times in the 86 seasons of La Liga. They could well have the title wrapped up by the time they welcome Real Madrid to the Camp Nou for the Clasico next month.

Both sides go into the game on the back of important wins in Europe, with Real Madrid winning 3-0 away to Juventus in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final, while Atletico beat Sporting Lisbon 2-0 in the Europa League.
