Ferrari Mechanic Suffers Awful Leg Break After Pit Lane Mishap

Ferrari Mechanic Suffers Awful Leg Break After Pit Lane Mishap

Ferrari's No1 driver nursed his tyres home for the final 10 laps to hold off the fight from Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas, who was second. Although the German driver looked steady behind the wheel, his mind was racing nearly as fast as Bottas' Mercedes behind him.

Meanwhile, Vettel was still leading from Bottas as the first round of pit stops began. The Ferrari continually lost ground into the final five laps as the gap between the silver bullet behind him shrunk to under two seconds.

Vettel would continue the charge for victory, now the lone Ferrari, with both Mercedes drivers trying to catch up.

After the win, Vettel now has 50 points in the 2018 driver standings, 17 points ahead of Hamilton, while the Briton's teammate Bottas is in third 28 points off the pace.

The race boiled down to a strategic battle between Ferrari and Mercedes, with Bottas using a fresher set of tyres in the closing stages to attack the Ferrari which had led from the start.

"I think there were some frustrating points during the race where they couldn't hear me, so I had to choose particular points during which I could speak to them".

Vettel made a clean start and Bottas swept past Raikkonen to split the Ferraris on the opening lap. We changed the tyres, I was taking it kind of easy and still catching up, it was going OK. The nasty incident during Raikkonen's second stop that cost both the driver and the team only compounded the situation for the Scuderia.

Raikkonen's left tyre was still being attended to when he slammed on the power and he drove straight into the leg of the mechanic who was badly hurt.

"It's early days, but anyway it was a lot better than two weeks ago and today, the race pace we had, was actually slightly better than what we expected coming into the race, so that was positive".

Bottas came close to overhauling the future victor, but not close enough. Hamilton, who voiced his frustrations over the radio on several occasions, completed the podium in third place, 8.5 seconds behind the front pair. Bottas, on the more durable rubber was catching up to Vettel and launched an attack on the penultimate lap but in the end, despite the lack of grip, Vettel managed to take the chequered flag just 0.6 seconds ahead of Bottas.
