French president claims 'proof' Syria used chemical weapons in deadly attack

French president claims 'proof' Syria used chemical weapons in deadly attack

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Thursday said the USA is still looking for "actual evidence" of a chemical weapons attack in Syria but United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley said the United States has "enough" proof.

Jeffrey also said that he thinks Mattis is anxious about losing focus on North Korea, which could result from an attack Syria.

Mattis declined to speculate about the possibility that Russian Federation would respond militarily to any USA strikes on Syria, but he said he was concerned about "how do we keep this from escalating out of control, if you get my drift on that".

"As each day goes by - as you know, it is a non-persistent gas - so it becomes more and more hard to confirm it", Mattis told the lawmakers.

Mattis strongly condemned the alleged poisoning of a former Russian spy and his daughter by a nerve agent in England and the reported chemical attack on Syrian civilians as affronts to civilization.

US Secretary of Defense James Mattis and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Dunford, right, arrive to testify before a House Armed Services Committee hearing on Capitol Hill, April 12, 2018.

Following an agriculture meeting at the White House later Thursday, Trump said of Syria that "we'll see what happens", but he expected decisions would be made "fairly soon".

Mattis said the USA did not have any personnel on the ground in Douma during the attack and said time is of the essence to gather evidence.

"We have not yet made any decision to launch military attacks into Syria", Mattis told Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii. "Our strategy is to engage by, with and through allies in all things we do. That's where we're at right now", Mattis told the committee.

"This is a complex area, I'll be the first to admit it", Mattis said.

"France will not allow any escalation that could harm the stability of the region as a whole but we can't let regimes that think they can do everything they want, including the worst things that violate global law, to act", Macron said.

According to a report in Politico, Mattis has been pushing President Donald Trump and his advisors to look beyond the "spray and pray" approach of cruise missile attacks to consider what the U.S.is trying to achieve in Syria and whether it has a plan to achieve those aims.

"We have forces in the field and the use of chemical weapons in Syria is not something that we should assume that 'well, because he didn't use them on us this time, he wouldn't use them on us next time, '" Mattis told Rep. John Garamendi, D-Calif. "We're still working on this".

Russian Federation on Thursday warned the U.S.to avoid any steps that could destabilize the situation there. About 2,000 US military personnel are in Syria.

In 2014, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons confirmed that Syria's chemical weaposn arsenal had been eliminated.
