Bon Jovi reunited onstage with former members for a powerful performance celebrating its admission into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and the late icon Nina Simone was welcomed to the prestigious music club with show-stopping performances from Lauryn Hill and Andra Day. After Bon Jovi took up the first hour of the four-plus hour long event, three members of Dire Straits unceremoniously inducted themselves.

"I've been writing this speech since I first strummed a broom and sang at the top of the stairs of my childhood home", he said. "In the end, it's all about time".

"Our careers have paralleled in a lot of ways - whether it was the ups or the downs - we've come through everything together and we do this at this point because we love the people we work with", he said on Howard Stern's show earlier this year. The performance marked the first time the band had performed in public with founding guitarist Richie Sambora since 2013 and bassist Alec John Such - also playing guitar in Cleveland - since a one-off appearance in 2001.

A handful of the 2018 Rock Hall inductees and the celebrities who inducted them headed backstage to the press room during tonight's Induction Ceremony.

Overall, the Dire Straits Rock Hall Induction experience will be remembered for not having a proper presenter, as well as a performance.

Simone was a leader in pushing for civil rights and influenced everyone from Aretha Franklin to Alicia Keys.

An inspiration to musicians from Elvis Presley to Johnny Cash, Tharpe was called "the godmother of rock and roll" Saturday night by Alabama Shakes lead singer Brittany Howard, who inducted one her biggest influences. Now that the Induction Ceremony will be taking place every other year in the Rock Hall City, fans can look forward to the 35th affair when acts such as Weezer, Oasis, Daft Punk and Usher are eligible.

The group then played "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band, ' 'Wildest Dreams, ' 'Nights in White Satin" and 'Ride My See Saw.' The ceremony will be aired in the U.S. by HBO on 5 May. Band members thanked fans as they accepted their award after a speech from Ann Wilson, who praised their "natural intelligence".

The rock-heavy 2018 list marks a return to the roots of the U.S. Hall of Fame, which for the past two years has broadened its base to include rap artists such as the late Tupac Shakur and N.W.A.
