Facebook admits tracking users and non-users off-site

Titled "Hard Questions: What Data Does Facebook Collect When I'm Not Using Facebook, and Why?", the blog post talks of how Facebook and its partners collect your data even when you're not using the Facebook at that point of time.

So, what does Facebook do with data it receives from other websites and apps?

Facebook will also send people and Page administrators notifications if they try to share a story or have shared one in the past that has been determined to be false. But Facebook's business model, as Zuckerberg repeatedly explained in his testimony, depends upon ads shown to people based on the interests they share on the network.

This includes the social plug-ins like the Facebook's "Share" and "Like" buttons; Facebook login, which can also be used to log into different websites along with apps, and also the Facebook Analytics, which allows the other services to track their own users along with other tools that let websites and apps to serve and measure the effectiveness of the advertisements. It said some respondents were particularly upset that the company had not informed them of the CA data breach in 2015.

For those without a Facebook account who are concerned about the company tracking them across the web, there is little that can be done to stay away from its Eye of Sauron-like gaze. "This is because other apps and sites don't know who is using Facebook", Baser added. "We are putting a link at the top of people's News Feeds to make sure that everyone sees it".

Facebook says it can collect personal data as many websites and apps use the social networking giant's services to make their content and ads more engaging and relevant. "Furthermore, it is important for us to tell people if and how their data may have been accessed via This is Your Digital Life".

The new press release from Facebook does not say whether Nigeria is part of the remaining 16 million users outside the United States or that more than 87 million would have been affected.

The case is In re Facebook Biometric Information Privacy Litigation, 15-cv-03747, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California (San Francisco).

Privacy concerns have swamped Facebook since it acknowledged last month that information about millions of users wrongly ended up in the hands of political consultancy Cambridge Analytica, a firm that has counted US President Donald Trump's 2016 electoral campaign among its clients. However, this data is used by Facebook to make money, like the $40 billion in revenue it made in 2017.

"This kind of data collection is fundamental to how the internet works". That game you play or app you use also contains a lot of personal information. Facebook has acknowledged that it can identify which users who live in IL have face templates, he wrote.

"We will review all legitimate reports and respond as quickly as possible when we identify a credible threat to people's information", Collin Greene, head of Product Security, Facebook.

David Baser, Product Management Director said, 'When you visit a site or app that uses our services, we receive information even if you're logged out or don't have a Facebook account.
