BMW unveils new electric iX3 concept

The BMW Brilliance Automotive joint venture will produce the future series-production version of the BMW Concept iX3 in Shenyang, China.

Under the skin is BMW's latest electric powertrain which bundles the motor, transmission and electronics in to a new Electric Drive Component, with more dense batteries offering weight and packaging advantages too.

The expansion of locally emission-free mobility vehicles is one of the key areas of centralized action, alongside with automated driving, high-end connectivity and new digital services, which are driving the company's transformation of the mobility industry as part of the NUMBER ONE NEXT strategy.

The technologies on board the iX3 include eDrive facilities.

BMW says that the new generation EV tech also has new and more powerful batteries.

The exterior design is very similar to that of the brand's X3 in terms of shape and size, but the detailing makes it obvious that it is a BMW i vehicle. This is visible in the concept vehicle both in the side and in the rear.

Called BMW Wireless Charging, it's available now as an option for the BMW 530e iPerformance plug-in hybrid sedan. Unlike competitors, BMW is able to do entirely without the use of rare earths such as neodymium, typically needed in electric motors for their unique magnetic properties.

As is so often the case, the iX3 is a concept in name only. In turn, the hybrids can drive exclusively on electric up to 100 km. Hang on, you might say, isn't there are little thing called the i3 electric vehicle running around? In an effort to reduce development costs, the iX3 will be heavily based on the regular X3 SUV, something that's readily obvious with the iX3 Concept's design.

Aesthetically, the iX3 is immediately recognisable as a BMW X model. The concept also features all-wheel drive and generates 270 PS from its batteries.
