Lieberman Threatens to Destroy Russian Missiles in Syria

Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman warned Tuesday that if Syria uses Russian-made air defense missiles against Israel, the IDF will strike back. "There must be one clear thing - if someone shoots at our planes, we will destroy them".

The Russian military indicated on Wednesday it will supply the Syrian government with a sophisticated air defense system following Moscow's condemnation of the missile attack launched by the United States, Britain and France earlier this month.

Further, Russia's Defense Ministry has also accused Britain of direct involvement in staging video images of alleged victims even though the United Kingdom has vehemently denied the accusation.

"What's important to us is that the weapons defense systems that the Russians transfer to Syria are not used against us".

On April 14, US President Donald Trump along with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Theresa May authorized a joint missile attack against alleged chemical weapons manufacturing sites inside Syria.

"Russian experts will continue to train Syrian military servicemen, particularly teaching them to use the new missile defense systems that are planned to be delivered to Syria in the near future", he said.

Syria and Russian Federation have said that it was rebel forces who staged the attacks.

"Based on it, a number of changes have already been introduced into the air defense system of the country, which will further increase its reliability", Rudskoy said.

Iran-allied Syrian forces shooting down an Israeli F-16 fighter jet by Syrian forces and the infiltration of Israeli airspace by an alleged Iranian drone prompted Israel to strike targets linked to the Islamic Republic in February.

According to him, the S-300 Favorit modified complex can destroy all carriers, including missiles.

On April 7, the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) and the White Helmets jointly said dozens of people died in a "poisonous chlorine gas attack" in Douma.

Defense analysts have questioned whether an S-300 system in Syrian hands could threaten Israel's air power in the region and prevent it from being able to conduct strikes against targets in Syria.

During his visit, Votel is met with Israeli military Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat and other senior defense officials.
