Global support for Alfie Evans spreads to Poland

Global support for Alfie Evans spreads to Poland

"We got rejected yesterday to go to Italy unfortunately", said Tom Evans on Thursday morning.

Tom's statement was a stark shift from earlier comments in which he accused Alder Hey doctors of hating him and his family and behaving aggressively toward them for refusing to accept the doctors' prognosis of Alfie.

The child, who is suffering from an undiagnosed degenerative brain disease, has been at the centre of a protracted legal fight in which United Kingdom doctors have argued that his condition will not improve, that he is suffering and should be allowed to die.

A group of doctors has criticized the refusal of some of their colleagues and a court to allow Alfie Evans to travel to Italy for treatment as "medical tyranny".

Evans' parents and the Vatican are seeking to fly him to Italy to receive palliative treatment, with the Vatican offering a plane and the Italian government granting the child Italian citizenship.

Instead, the judge said the best Alfie's parents could hope for was to "explore" the options of removing him from intensive care either to a ward, a hospice or his home.

A doctor treating Alfie told reporters off the record his parents can't take Alfie home to die unless there is a "sea change" in their attitude. Some people say it's a miracle.

The toddler's father says his son has been off a ventilator for three days and is showing no signs of deterioration. The parents' lawyers went to court Wednesday to try to overturn that decision.

"Since he's been off the life support, he has proved every doctor and every judge wrong", he said.

"As I sit next to Alfie's bedside, every second of every day, it encourages me more and more that he will live for "x" amount of months, possibly years".

A Polish flag flies above a banner for Alfie Evans outside Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool, Britain, on Wednesday.

Taking to Facebook overnight, Kate shared a poignant picture of Alfie appearing to smile as he cuddled up to a soft toy in his hospital bed.

"Our staff have received in person, via phone calls, email, and through social media channels a barrage of highly abusive and threatening language and behaviour that has shocked us all".

"We fully endorse the messages sent by Alder Hey about this and hope that those responsible for this abuse will think very carefully about the impact they are having on front-line hospital staff".

Tom and Alfie's mother Kate have fought and lost a series of protracted legal battles, in the High Court, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court and European Court of Human Rights.

"Alfie is doing good, 72 hours independent breathing", Evans added.

They say their focus now is on bringing him home, and they want to work with doctors to achieve that.
