Tiger Woods had another bad day on the greens

The changes have seen the course be elongated to 7,554 yards, and the par drop from 72 to 71. However, the 29-year-old who doesn't have so much as a Web.com Tour victory on his resume tamed the hard Quail Hollow track with two eagles and three birdies against a lone bogey Thursday.

Tiger Woods' first round since the Masters left him perplexed and questioning his putting.

Woods' best finish this season is a tie for second at the Valspar Championship, but said he's still trying to get a gauge for where his overall game is following years of persistent back problems.

Woods said he remembers the speed of the bent grass greens in 2012. They're on the slower side. "The greens aren't quite as fast as when I remember playing here, but they are more hard". What I was feeling and sending just didn't match up. It nearly got even better. I'm hitting it fine, and I just need to make some putts. "I would have taken that score before I went out there", McIlroy, who said he struggled during Wednesday's pro-am, told the Golf Channel. A birdie-free first 17 holes on Friday finally got an exclamation mark with a 13-foot putt at the last for his only circle on the scorecard.

On Friday, Woods once again failed to make up any ground on the leaders despite hitting 13 greens in regulation. The last time Woods won this tournament was way back in 2007, a two-stroke victory over Steve Stricker.

"Seriously", Woods said. "Most of the golf courses I've played have been really hard setups". The bunkers are certainly more in play than they used to be, and the greens are new, so they're a little springy.

Woods misjudged a short pitch on to the driveable par-four eighth green and could only make par, leaving him requiring a final-hole birdie to be assured of progressing to the weekend.

John Peterson shot a 6-under-par 65 on Thursday to build a two-shot lead after the first round of the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club.

Two-time victor Rory McIlroy was in the group at 68. "I'm right there. If I make a couple putts, I'd be 2 or 3-under par, which is fine".

Thomas made a mediocre return to the venue on Thursday with a two-over 73, while Masters champion Reed fared better with a 71.

After the round, Woods was off to the putting green.

Woods finished tied for 32nd in last tournament at Augusta National after a final-round 69. It should be noted that the Wells Fargo Championship is the only regular PGA Tour event where he's missed the 36-hole cut twice.
