'Huge destruction of both life and property' as Kenya dam bursts

At least 38 people have been killed after a dam burst in Kenya following a sustained period of heavy rain.

The burst happened in Solai, Nakuru county, 120 miles northwest of the capital, Nairobi, late on Wednesday.

Property estimated to be worth millions of shillings was also destroyed by the raging waters and thick mud.

Kenya Red Cross said on Twitter it had so far rescued 39 people.

Local reports suggest roughly 100 homes have been affected, including properties on the Nyakinyua Farm that borders the reservoir.

Police chief Joseph Kioko said, "We have recovered... bodies and many people are missing".

Kenya, like other countries in East Africa, has experienced heavy rain over the past two months.

A search and rescue operation led by police was set up and includes officers from the National Youth Service (NYS) as well as members of the public.

The floodwaters swept away powerlines, homes and buildings, including a primary school, a Reuters photographer on the scene said, as rescue workers picked through rubble and mud searching for survivors.

"The county has dispatched ambulances to the scene to aid in evacuation of victims", he said.

The death toll from devastating floods in Kenya surged on Wednesday, when at least 20 people were killed when a dam burst in Nakuru county.

Mr Kinyanjui said they were doing their best to evacuate affected families to safety and assist victims get medical attention.

After a severe drought, weeks of torrential rains in Kenya have led to flooding and mudslides that have left 159 dead.
