Iraqi forces capture 5 top ISIS leaders along Syria border, United States says

The second leader, Ismail al-Eithawi, who had been captured previously, was said to have been told to use his phone to summon the others.

The ISIS leaders are said to have featured in a series of sick execution videos, filmed when the extremist group controlled large swathes of Iraq.

President Donald Trump on Thursday hailed the fact that five of the "most wanted" Islamic State leaders have been captured recently, including Abu Zeid al-Iraqi, one of the main collaborators of the organisation's chief, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Those held include Saddam Jamal, a Syrian who served as the group's governor of Syria's eastern Euphrates region.

Five senior Islamic State (ISIS) leaders have been captured in a sting operation orchestrated by American and Iraqi intelligence.

The U.S. -led coalition used the intel to launch an airstrike last month that took the lives of 39 suspected ISiS militants in Syria, according to the Times. After being interrogated by American and Iraqi intelligence agents, the ISIS official lured four other leaders of the terror group across the Iraqi border, where they were arrested.

Last year, the Pentagon said that there were "some indicators" that al-Baghdadi was still alive a month after Russian Federation claimed to have killed him in a strike near the Syrian city of Raqqa. The Iraqi air force has carried out several air strikes since previous year against Islamic State positions in Syrian territory. At the height of the group's power their self-proclaimed caliphate stretched from the edges of Aleppo in Syria to just north of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
