Pink jersey honour for Yates at Giro d'Italia

Pink jersey honour for Yates at Giro d'Italia

Dennis held a one-second advantage going into the 163-km stage, but fell away despite a gutsy effort on the final climb to lose his grip on the pink jersey.

"It's unbelievable. I needed this for my comeback to the Giro after one year of absence", said Chaves, who pulled on the King of the Mountains blue jersey. At 1.5km out, he rocketed away from 2017 race victor Dumoulin, Froome and other favourites. However, as Bennett frantically gesticulated for them to work together, Yates decided it was his time to shine, launching an unstoppable attack with 1.5 kilometres remaining.

"The start was insane".

Groupama-FDJ rider Thibaut Pinot finished third, 26 seconds behind the leading duo in the same group as reigning champion Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb), Tour de France champion Chris Froome and UAE Team Emirates rider Fabio Aru. I could save some energy.

Chavez helped Yates to recruit the necessary time gap to become the new owner of the pink Jersey of the General classification.

Chaves is third overall, 26 seconds behind the 25-year-old Yates. Yates made his move with 1500 metres remaining and surged into the lead before indicating to Chaves he should take the win.

"I feel as if I'm getting better and better each day after Israel now, with the bigger picture in mind of getting to the third week as strong as possible and obviously this is the first main objective of the season for me and things are still on track".

"It felt really good", the Yates told Eurosport.

"For the team it's great that (Froome) is riding well". I didn't have to do anything because Esteban was up the road.

The result also doubles as an extremely positive sign of his chances for the slew of mountain-top finishes coming later in the race, after he showed no signs of weakness on the first mountain of the 2018 Giro.

The Giro heads to the Italian mainland for Friday's seventh stage - a flat 159km route from Pizzo to Praia a Mare.
