England announces Russia World Cup 2018 squad

Alexander-Arnold, who has made three appearances for the Under-21s, had been invited to train with the senior squad ahead of the friendlies against the Netherlands and Italy in March and has enjoyed an impressive season with the Champions League finalists.

With the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation right around the corner, England announced their 23-man squad for the tournament, on Wednesday.

Long-time goalkeeper Joe Hart and injury-prone midfielder Jack Wilshere were omitted, for example.

Loftus-Cheek, 22, has spent the season on loan at Crystal Palace and was pivotal in ensuring they preserved their Premier League status under former England manager Roy Hodgson - playing 27 times as Palace finished 11th in the table.

Chelsea stalwart Gary Cahill has received a call-up despite suspicions he would be culled.

Alexander-Arnold was the headline pick Wednesday in a 23-man group containing 449 caps, making it the most inexperienced World Cup squad selected by England this century.

Danny Rose who has also had an injury plagued season was given the nod by Southgate and Ruben Loftus-Cheek will also fly England's flag in Russian Federation.

Five players have also been placed on standby - Tom Heaton, James Tarkowski, Lewis Cook, Jake Livermore and Lallana. "On England's behalf, it was nice of them to let the manager tell me".

"It wasn't an enjoyable part of the job and I feel it's important to acknowledge their contribution in getting us to Russian Federation". Both calls were really tough.

Ashley Young, rejuvenated at Manchester United, joined Danny Rose as left-back options instead of Bertrand, who will feel hard done by considering he played a key role for Southgate. "Get me to Russian Federation!"

Everton's Jordan Pickford, Stoke City's Jack Butland and Burnley's Nick Pope are the chosen stoppers who will be vying to start in Russian Federation.

Manchester United's Ashley Young and Manchester City's Fabian Delph - who can both play a number of positions in defence and midfield - also get the call.

Gareth Southgate announced his 23-man squad this morning and Rashford had the ideal response to the news that he had made the cut.

England first play Tunisia four days later, before facing Panama (June 24) and Belgium on June 28.
