Zuckerberg has agreed to speak at the European Parliament

Facebook has confirmed that the social media giant's CEO has no plans to come to the UK to give evidence over the Cambridge Analytica data scandal, despite the UK Parliament threatening to formally summon the U.S. billionaire.

Wylie is the pink-haired Canadian data scientist whose decision to blow the whistle on the use of Facebook data by Cambridge Analytica set off shock waves that are still reverberating through Westminster, Washington DC, and Silicon Valley.

The Senate Judiciary committee holds a hearing on the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

In April, Zuckerberg fielded questions over two days from USA lawmakers over how it handles private data, refusing to make any promises to support new legislation or change how the social network does business.

Schroepfer was sent into the ring after Zuckerberg refused to appear himself, despite appearing before members of the the U.S. Congress and accepting an invitation to do the same before the European Commission at some point in the near future. "It is a step in the right direction towards restoring confidence", Tajani said in the statement posted on his official Twitter account. Zuckerberg is not expected to attend those, a European Parliament spokesperson said.

Around 2.7 million of these users were European residents, according to the European Commission.

The timing of Mr. Zuckerberg's announcement, and of his visit to Brussels, coincides with Europe's introduction next week of the world's most aggressive rules for protecting data privacy. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requires companies to give European citizens greater control over their personal data. Collins warned Zuckerberg last month that if he does not come voluntarily, he could be issued a formal summons, which would force him to appear before the parliament when he next enters the United Kingdom.

The committee had issued a letter containing 39 questions to Facebook, which were answered by the company's Chief technology Officer Mike Schroepfer in lieu of Zuckerberg.

The social network's United Kingdom head of public policy Rebecca Stimson has now responded to the committee and provided written answers to the 39 questions.
